His adventures are legendary as he began in northern Mozambique, skirting the authorities in German East Africa and later the Portuguese. By 1912 he had shot more elephants than any man alive. Among the 1,200 elephants he shot were colossal tusks with one pair weighing 152 and 137 pounds. He was poisoned in 1929 by the Azande tribe and never recovering he died in 1932.
